Hannibal is a community of approximately 17,500 people located in northeast Missouri.  This historic, full-service community is located approximately 86 miles north of St. Louis, on the Mississippi River.  In addition to the Mark Twain legacy and a healthy tourism industry, the community is home to a number of large manufacturers and service-based industries. The city employs approximately 155 employees; the Fire Department itself employs 41 personnel at full staffing.

Hannibal operates three fire stations, as well as an administrative fire services building.  The Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, Officer Manager, and Training Officers work from the administrative fire services building.  An on-duty Assistant Chief oversees all three fire stations, while Captains assigned to each individual station are responsible for direct supervision at their respective fire station.

The Hannibal Fire Department is a full-time, paid, professionally-staffed service.  The Fire Department is under the supervision of the City Manager and is subject to the oversight of the City Council.

Aside from the Fire Chief, there is also a Deputy Fire Chief, two Training Officers, three Assistant Chiefs, six Captains, fifteen Engineers, twelve Fire Fighters, and an Office Manager.  Of these personnel, approximately three are EMT-Paramedic certified, and approximately thirty-seven are EMT-Basic certified.  Fire Department functions include fire fighting, hazardous material response, BLS emergency medical service, vehicle extrication, search & rescue, code enforcement, fire prevention education, equipment testing, and other endeavors that assist the city.  The Marion County Ambulance District operates the community’s EMS system. The Fire Department operates three pumper engines, two ladder trucks, one mid-size rescue vehicle, a host of various support vehicles, and two rescue boats.  The department has done an excellent job of maintaining the quality and modernity of its fleet and equipment.
